The University of Newcastle upon Tyne has grown from a School of Medicine and Surgery, established in Newcastle in 1834, to become one of Britain’s leading universities. Seven faculties: Agriculture and Biological Sciences; Arts; Education; Engineering; Law, Environment and Social Sciences; Medicine; and Science deliver over 200 undergraduate degree programmes and 130 taught Masters programmes; all departments have research programmes leading to Master’s or Doctorate degrees, including split PhDs. The quality of all academic programmes is tightly controlled.
Facilities
Based in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, its compact campus extends into the city centre. The city is renowned for the friendliness of its people, its very high quality of life and relatively low cost of living; it has long been a welcoming place for international students. In addition to well-equipped laboratories for engineering and sciences the University boasts an award-winning library and an excellent campus- wide computer network. All aspects of language learning are strongly supported by the Language Centre and its new Open Access Centre. Excellent sports facilities include an 18-hole golf course.
Accommodation & Welfare
The University owns and controls over 4,600 student accommodation places and guarantees University accommodation to all undergraduates during their first year at University. Accommodation for postgraduates includes around 100 flats for student families and couples. Private sector accommodation is plentiful and relatively inexpensive.
The University is strongly committed to the welfare, both academic and pastoral, of all its students, and provides a network of support services which is sensitive to students’ needs. The special interests of international students are addressed in many ways, including International Welcome and Orientation programmes.
Location
Located in the North East of England, the city of Newcastle has convenient road, rail and air access to all parts of the UK and continental Europe. The rail journey to London takes only two hours forty minutes and Newcastle International Airport is only 10 km from the University campus.
Additional Information
A wide range of English Language programmes exists. Foundation and shorter Pre-Sessional programmes, Summer Schools and remedial term-time classes are all available through the superbly equipped Language Centre. A small number of postgraduate scholarships are available and are allocated on the basis of academic excellence.
