The University of Leeds was granted its Royal Charter as a university in 1904. A major research-led institution, the University has over 22,000 students, including more than 2,200 from outside Europe. Academic provision is extensive and includes engineering, science, medicine, dentistry, education (including TESOL), law, a wide range of languages (including Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Arabic and Mongolian), business management and accounting, social sciences, arts and humanities, as well as many interdisciplinary areas such as international and communication studies.
Unusual subjects include textiles, mining, transport studies, food science, and fuel and energy engineering. Although based close to the city centre, the campus is self-contained, with all main facilities such as the libraries, sports halls and Students’ Union close at hand.
Facilities
The University’s libraries hold over 2.5 million books and periodicals, have fully computerised facilities incorporating a CD-ROM system and include the Brotherton Library, which is one of the four largest research libraries in the UK. The University also has an extensive computer network of over 1,200 terminals. In addition many departments have their own computing facilities. The Language Centre is a state of the-art facility which provides self-access audio, video and computer-based-learning materials as well as satellite TV channels.
The centre also provides additional tuition in English language.
Sporting facilities include two large sports halls and extensive playing fields. The Students’ Union has over 50 sports clubs.
Accommodation & Welfare
The University guarantees to offer accommodation for three years to all single undergraduates who apply in time and are paying overseas fees (subject to minimum occupancy of one academic year). Similarly, all single postgraduates on taught masterships and paying overseas fees are guaranteed University accommodation for one year. Furthermore, the University controls over 160 family accommodation units, although it is not possible to offer guarantees to students bringing their families. Accommodation is in halls of residence (where meals are provided) or self-catering flats where students cook their own meals.
The Adviser to International Students provides practical help on a range of issues including immigration and schooling for the children of students. The office also organizes social events, particularly for students’ spouses and their children. The University Union provides welfare services and is the recreational centre for students, having over 150 social, cultural, sporting and national societies. There is a student health service on campus.
Location
The fastest-growing financial city in the UK, Leeds is just over two hours by train from London. It has excellent motorway connections with other major cities and an international airport serving destinations in Europe and North America. There is a direct rail link from the centre of Leeds to Manchester airport.
